Senior BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Mia has been placed on life support at Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital in Bashundhara.
His Private Political Secretary Mokshedur Rahman Abir said he was taken to life support at 7:20pm on Thursday.
“His condition worsened. His kidneys are not functioning, blood infection has been detected, and he has long suffered from neurological complications,” Abir said.
He added that doctors started life support after Rafiqul’s elder son arrived from London.
The 85-year-old BNP leader was admitted on Jul 21 and had been receiving treatment in an ICU-equipped cabin.
His condition deteriorated on Thursday afternoon.
Rafiqul, a former housing minister in Khaleda Zia’s 1991 government, was elected MP in 1991 and 1996.
