Technicians have installed a new government telephone line at former president Mohammed Shahabuddin's Gulshan residence, where activity remained minimal after his resignation.
A visit to the Road 123 residence “Green Villa” found a quiet scene, with security personnel inside the compound but no crowds or unusual activity on Friday.
Security guard Mohammad Masum said the president will move into the fifth floor of the building if he resigns.
"The president visited the house three or four days ago. More than a hundred people, including members of the security forces, accompanied him.
“He arrived around 11:45am and left at about 8:45pm. Some preparatory work has already been completed at the residence, and members of the Special Branch are currently here," he said.
Abdur Razzaq, a Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) mechanic overseeing the work, said he and a colleague had been sent to install the new landline.
"Although [Friday] is a public holiday, we were told that if the president resigns, he will move into this residence. The previous line was disconnected after he became president, so we are installing a new one," Razzaq said.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad is due to hold a press briefing at the Parliament Complex at 5pm after cutting short a private visit to Thailand, where he had travelled on Jul 19 for medical treatment.
A senior parliamentary official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the briefing would focus on "the issue of the president".
The official itinerary had scheduled the speaker's return to home on Jul 26.
Speculation over Shahabuddin's possible resignation began on Wednesday following a Facebook post by exiled journalist Zulkarnain Saer.
Several officials at the President's Office told bdnews24.com on Thursday that he had decided to resign, but was waiting for the speaker to return to the country.
On Friday, Shahabuddin confirmed to bdnews24.com that he had resigned, citing ill health.
“I’m sick, so it’s done,” he said.
