The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has ordered that retired lieutenant general Sheikh Mamun Khaled, a former director general (DG) of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), be shown arrested in a case involving enforced disappearances and crimes against humanity.

A three-member bench of ICT-2, led by Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury, also permitted the investigation agency to take the retired three-star general into their custody (Safe Home) for two days of questioning.

The other two members of the bench are Md Manjurul Bashid and Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.

Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam, who moved the plea, told reporters that the prosecution possesses information regarding Mamun’s alleged involvement in enforced disappearances, murders, and crimes against humanity linked to the “Aynaghar” (secret detention centres) during the Sheikh Hasina administration.

"The accused could not be produced before the tribunal earlier as he was on remand in another case,” he explained.

After Mamun was sent to jail today upon completion of that remand, he was brought here through the prison authorities, the chief prosecutor added.

The tribunal instructed the investigators to exercise "special caution" during the questioning at the Safe Home.

Under tribunal rules, the interrogation must be conducted without any threats, coercion, or intimidation.

Mamun joined the DGFI as a director in December 2007.

He later served as the director of the Counter Intelligence Bureau (CIB) in June 2008.

Under the Awami League government, he returned to the DGFI as its DG in 2011, serving for approximately 18 months.

Later in his career, he served as the vice-chancellor of the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) and as the commandant of the National Defence College (NDC).

The retired general was apprehended by the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Mirpur DOHS on the night of Mar 25.

He had been questioned in several phases of remand in connection with a separate murder case before being produced at the tribunal under heavy security on Monday afternoon.
