Gono Odhikar Parishad chief Nurul Haque Nur has left Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after a 17-day stay following injuries he sustained from baton charges by law-enforcing agencies.
According to a post on Nur's Facebook page, he was released from the hospital at 4:30pm on Monday.
Brig Gen Md Asaduzzaman, director of Bangladesh’s largest public hospital, told reporters that Nur's physical condition had improved and he was discharged based on the medical board's decision.
Although his condition has improved, he has not fully recovered and may require several months to do so. His Facebook post read that he will be admitted to another hospital on Tuesday.
Citing the doctor, the post stated that it would take several months for him to fully recover from the head and facial injuries. Currently, his nasal bone is fractured and displaced, which requires surgery to put it back into position.
The doctor has advised the operation to be done in two to three weeks.
"Additionally, due to a fracture in his right maxilla and a compressed nerve, the area from below his right eye to the right side of his nose and lip is partially numb. This also requires surgery to repair the nerve,” the post read.
“He also has other physical complications, including a blunt trauma to the liver. In this condition, he has been temporarily discharged from DMCH. He will consult with his personal doctors soon and will be admitted to another hospital in the morning."
On the evening of Aug 29, a clash broke out between the Jatiya Party and the Gono Odhikar Parishad activists in Dhaka’s Kakrail. The Gono Odhikar Parishad activists later gathered outside their party office on Box Culvert Road.
As Nur was preparing to speak with the media, Army and police members began baton-charging him and his colleagues at that time.
According to the party, at least 50 activists, including Nur, were injured in the attack.
He was first taken to Islami Bank Hospital and then to DMCH. Subsequently, leaders from various political parties, including the BNP, visited him there.
On Sept 2, Nur’s wife Maria Akhter, accompanied by the organisation’s General Secretary Rashed Khan and Senior Joint General Secretary Hasan Al Mamun, met with the chief advisor at the State Guest House Jamuna concerning the matter.
Following the meeting, the chief advisor instructed the health ministry to make immediate arrangements to send Nur abroad for treatment.
