Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has visited the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery to inquire after the treatment of those injured in the Milestone School and College jet crash disaster.
The chief advisor spoke to the institute’s Director Dr Mohammad Nasiruddin about the details of the incident and the current condition of the injured after reaching the hospital at 9:10pm on Saturday, the Chief Advisor’s Office said.
The director said that the patients are being treated as per the recommendations of a multidisciplinary consultation board according to international protocols. In order to ensure the best service, advice from foreign experts is also being considered along with the opinions of local doctors.
Currently, four patients in critical condition, nine in severe condition, and 23 in intermediate condition are being treated at the burn institute, the director said. The classification is being updated according to the changes in the patients' conditions.
When the chief advisor asked if there was any shortage of medical equipment, machinery or medicines, the director said that everything necessary is being provided by the government. Some special equipment had also been brought in by a medical team from Singapore.
When asked about the details, Md Sayedur Rahman, the special assistant to the chief advisor, said that initially the injured were taken to various nearby hospitals. From there, they were transferred to the burn institute and the Combined Military Hospital after receiving first aid.
Immediately after the incident, the ministry asked the burn institute to remain ready and it was possible to quickly provide medical care to about 30 patients in the emergency department.
Due to the casualties being treated at different hospitals there had initially been some confusion as the actual tally of casualties, he said. Some remains also had to be identified through DNA testing, which took time.
Sayedur mentioned that the shortage of ambulances was acutely felt during the transfer of patients, which clearly showed a limitation of the country's emergency healthcare system.
The chief advisor asked for an immediate specific action plan and ordered immediate action to be taken in this regard.
He emphasised the importance of psychological counselling for the families of the injured and deceased to overcome the trauma of the incident and instructed a joint initiative to be taken on the matter by the injured.
He suggested that all the injured, their families and everyone related to Milestone School and College be included in this programme.
He also instructed the director to take care of the relatives of the injured during their stay in the hospital.
Yunus said, "We are sincere and determined to ensure the best treatment for the patients."
He expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude to all the doctors and nurses involved in the treatment of patients in different hospitals. He also thanked those who came from abroad and stood by the victims and healthcare workers during this difficult time.
