He is succeeding Asaduzzaman Mia, one of the longest serving DMP chiefs whose contractual extension of a month is ending on Sept 13.

“I will try my best from my position to bring more dynamism to Dhaka Metropolitan Police,” Shafiqul told bdnews24.com in an immediate reaction to his new assignment on Wednesday.

A BCS eighth batch officer, Shafiqul hails from Chuadanga’s Alamdanga. He joined Bangladesh Police in 1989 after graduating from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. He is scheduled to retire on Oct 29, 2021.

He had earlier worked as commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police. He was praised for his role is quelling political violence in the port city before and after the 2014 general elections.

He had later been transferred to Chattogram Range and then Dhaka Range as DIG. Prior to CID, he had headed the anti-terrorism unit as an additional IGP.

Additional IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun is replacing him as new chief of the Criminal Investigation Department, the home ministry said in an order.

Mamun had worked as Nilphamari superintendent of police, DMP deputy commissioner, and Dhaka Range DIG.

In another order, the government said DIGs Mahbub Hossain and Biswas Afzal Hossain, both currently working at the Special Branch, have been transferred to the Police Headquarters with the duty of additional IGP.

A police officer said Mahbub was likely to succeed Mamun.
