Jamaat-e-Islami’s demand for proportional representation and the complications over the symbol of the National Citizen Party (NCP) will not affect the conduct of elections, according to Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarker.

“Election Commission is a constitutional body. It continues to work under the existing law. It cannot and will not act in violation of the law,” Anwarul said on Friday at a workshop in Chapainawabganj city.

He added that preparations for the national election are under way as per legal provisions.

The commissioner also said those who were involved in illegal activities during past elections would be carefully scrutinised and kept away from poll duties.
