Dhaka College students have demanded the resignation of Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Mamun Ahmed, holding him responsible for the "face-to-face" confrontation between Dhaka University students and those from seven government colleges affiliated to it.
They also called for the removal of responsible New Market Police Station officials over their alleged involvement in the attack on Dhaka College student “Rakib”, identified with a single name.
The students are also urging the Dhaka University authorities to apologise to the students of the seven colleges.
They have set a 24-hour deadline for these demands to be met.
In a briefing on the college premises on Monday night, Md Moinul Islam, a Dhaka College student and a member of the central executive committee of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, said: “This morning, we held a press conference and presented six clear demands.
“One of them was to cancel the affiliation and consider the legitimate demands of the students of seven colleges.”
He continued, "We appreciate that the Dhaka University administration and the relevant authorities have considered this matter.
“However, no steps have been initiated to address the other demands.”
Moinul accused Dhaka University students of making "vulgar comments and obscene gestures" towards female students from seven colleges, including Eden Mohila College and Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls’ College, during the clashes on Sunday night.
He said, "Dhaka University authorities must apologise for this. The New Market police brutally attacked Dhaka College student Rakib with the intent to kill him.
“Those involved in the attack, including the duty officer and the assistant commissioner, must be removed and face departmental action within 24 hours.”
“It is entirely the pro-vice chancellor’s fault for pitting Dhaka University and seven college students against each other. He must resign within 24 hours,” Moinul added.
He warned of plans to besiege New Market Police Station if demands are unmet within the deadline.
Moinul said, "If the Dhaka University administration refuses to meet our demands and does not apologise to the students of Dhaka College, no vehicles, including Dhaka University buses, will be allowed to pass in front of the seven colleges.”
