The interim government has appointed former Appellate Division judge Justice Zinat Ara as the chairman of the Law Commission, making her the first woman to hold this position.
The caretaker administration also appointed two members to the commission: retired High Court judge Justice Shamim Hasnain and Professor Naima Haque.
The appointments are effective for three years under the Law Commission Act, 1996, according to separate notifications from the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
Zinat replaces former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque, who resigned after the fall of the Awami League government, as the head of the commission.
His resignation notification was issued on Aug 13, which left the position vacant until Zinat’s appointment on Wednesday.
Zinat will receive the salary, allowances, and benefits equivalent to those of a judge of the Supreme Court's Appellate Division
A law student, Zinat had served as a district and sessions judge and later joined the High Court as an additional judge. She eventually retired as a justice in the Appellate Division.
