An elderly man has died after a freight train collided with a lorry in the Sagorika area of Chattogram city.

The accident occurred on the railway line adjacent to the Bir Shrestho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Cricket Stadium in Pahartali Thana around 4:30am on Tuesday.

The deceased, identified as 60-year-old Shamsul Haque, was a resident of Didar Colony in Pahartali. He hailed from Kishoreganj.

Shahidul Islam, chief of Chattogram GRP Police Station, told bdnews24.com that the freight train was heading to Dhaka from the Chattogram Goods Port Yard and was passing by the stadium in Sagorika when a lorry got onto the tracks and rammed the train’s engine.

Following the collision, the lorry overturned and crushed Shamsul, killing him on the spot.

Eastern Railway Divisional Transport Officer Anisur Rahman said, "We are investigating the cause of the accident."
