A Dhaka court has handed a 10-year jail term to a man for raping a six-year old in Dhaka's Kamrangirchar four years ago.
The court also fined the convict, Nasir, Tk 100,000. A failure to pay the fine will add another year to his jail term.
Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman announced the verdict on Thursday.
The suspect was produced in court from prison for the verdict hearing, and later sent to jail after the sentencing.
Public Prosecutor Ershad Alam George said, "The Dhaka deputy commissioner has been ordered to sell off [Nasir’s] movable and immovable assets to collect the amount and pay the victim or their family."
According to the case documents, Nasir used to be affectionate towards the child, buying chocolates and biscuits frequently. On Nov 26, he lured the child with chocolate and proceeded with the act at South Munshihati.
At one point, the child started screaming, prompting the convict to let go. The child then returned home crying and shared the incident with their mother. Later, the victim received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The mother of the child filed a case on the same day the incident occurred naming Nasir as the suspect. Police arrested him on Dec 27. He later confessed to the court.
Sub-Inspector Riyad Uddin of Kamrangirchar Police Station submitted the chargesheet to the court on May 31, 2022 following an investigation. The trial began after the suspect was indicted.
