His body was taken to Shaheed Mirar around 11:15am Wednesday where the freedom fighter was given a guard of honour on behalf of the district administration. A solemn tune was played on the bugle.

On behalf of the President his private secretary Monirul Islam Swadhin laid a wreath on Belal Mohammad’s coffin.

Foreign MInister Dipu Moni, cultural affairs minister Abul Kalam Azad , MP AN Mahfuza Khatun Baby Moudud, Awami League Joint General Secretry Mahbubul Alam Hanif and Bangla Academy’s Director General Shamsuzzaman Khan also paid last respects to the late poet.

Freedom fighters and members of different political, social and cultural organizations gathered at the Shaheed Minar to pay homage to the deceased.

In Kolkata, many old friends of Belal Mohammed expressed grief at the passing away of the late poet and radio wizard.

"It is the end of era. We have fond memories of Belal," said former All India Radio broadcaster Upen Tarafder. “We all worked together for the cause of Bangladesh’s Liberation."

Writer Samaresh Majumder fondly remembered Belal.

"He was a great friend and totally commited to the liberation of Bangladesh."

Belal Mohammad’s body was taken to his workplace Bangladesh Betar Kendra’s Shahbagh office at 10:30am from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College’s mortuary.

His long time colleagues paid tribute at his second janaza held there at around 10:45am.

Belal Mohammad, who played a crucial role in broadcasting Bangladesh’s Declaration of Independence, died in the early hours of Tuesday while undergoing treatment at a hospital. He was 77.

His first janaza was held at his Uttara residence the same day.
