The Ministry of Housing and Public Works has ordered a full audit of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) accounts and property allocations during the Awami League’s time in power, covering the period from 2009 to 2024.

The review, to be carried out by the ministry’s Department of Internal Audit, will examine the transfer and allocation of plots and flats, along with RAJUK’s income and expenditure over the past 16 years.

The ministry has set a three-month deadline for the audit, according to a press release issued on Sunday.

The move follows allegations of widespread irregularities in RAJUK’s allocation of flats and plots after the Awami League government fell during the mass uprising of Aug 5 last year.

One high-profile case currently before the courts accuses the family of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina of misconduct in the allocation of six 10-katha plots under RAJUK’s Purbachal New Town project.

More recently, senior officials of secretary rank have been accused of improperly obtaining flats in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area.

According to the ministry, the order is based on the Internal Audit Department’s "Allocation of Functions", the officials’ "Charter of Duties", and a decision taken by the ministry’s budget management committee on Apr 23.

The ministry has issued detailed instructions for the audit, including:

>> The Department of Internal Audit will formulate an audit plan to conduct the audit activities. The audit activities will be carried out accordingly.

>> The audit should be conducted in accordance with the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha Act and related regulations.

>> Detailed information (name, designation, mobile phone number ) of the members of the audit team must be sent to the ministry before the audit.

>> RAJUK must be kept properly informed about the audit activities.

>> The audit process must be completed within three months.

>> After the audit, the Department of Internal Audit must submit a detailed report to the secretary of the ministry, which must have the approval of the appropriate authority.
