Hamid spoke to his counterpart for about five minutes on Saturday evening, his Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin said.
“The president enquired about the Indian president’s wife Subhra Mukherjee’s treatment and wished her recovery from illness,” Abedin told bdnews24.com.
Mukherjee thanked Hamid for his call and asked about his health, he added.
Subhra Mukherjee’s ancestral home is in Bangladesh’s Narhail district. She had been suffering from respiratory problems and was hospitalised on Aug 7.
According to Indian media reports her condition was “serious”.
Prime Minister Hasina called Mukherjee around 7:15pm and spoke for about 20 minutes, her Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said.
She prayed for his wife’s quick recovery, a Facebook post by her press wing said.
Press Secretary Karim said Hasina’s younger sister Sheikh Rehana, too, spoke with the Indian president and wished his wife swift recovery.
President Mukherjee also remembered Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Bangladesh’s National Mourning Day.
He said he had already read Bangabandhu’s ‘Unfinished Memoir’.
