Police said Saidur Rahman, 35, is a ‘wanted criminal’ at Dhaka’s Badda. His family, however, said he was associated with the ruling Awami League’s youth front – the Juba League.
The law enforcers averted answering whether Saidur was among those involved in the killing of three Awami League leaders at Badda. Locals, however, told media that they suspected his involvement.
He used to live at Shimultala in South Badda.
Saidur, who was an accused in three murder cases, was detained on Thursday afternoon based on a tip-off, said Gazipur District Detective Branch OC Amir Hossain.
He gave detectives the location where a pistol and bullets were hidden. The weapon and ammunitions were later recovered from Salna area.
“A DB team went to recover more weapons at midnight based on information divulged by him during questioning. Saidur’s men were hiding in the bushes at Salna area. They began firing at the approaching vehicle.
“Police retaliated and in the gun battle Saidur was hit.”
Detectives brought Saidur to Saheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College and Hospital at 12:10am.
He died in less than half an hour due to excessive blood loss, said the hospital’s resident physician Abdus Salam Sarkar.
