Police have arrested a man claiming to be a former colleague of Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on charges of extortion in Dhaka.
The suspect, identified as Kamal Khan alias Shah Kamal Khan, allegedly posed as a journalist and a political figure to deceive people and extort money, according to police.
Kamal, 46, was detained from Demra’s Matuail on Saturday, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Md Talebur Rahman said in a statement.
The statement detailed that on Jan 16, Kamal contacted Inspector GM Musa Kalimullah of the Demra Traffic Zone, introducing himself as a former colleague of the chief advisor, as well as a journalist and political figure.
Kamal reportedly demanded Tk 10,000 and threatened to lodge complaints against Musa with the IGP Complaint Cell and the home advisor if his demands were not met.
Inspector Musa later learned from his colleagues that the same man had previously demanded money from other police personnel under similar pretences.
Based on the complaint, police, with the assistance of Demra Traffic Zone officers, lured the suspect to the Matuail U-loop area on Saturday afternoon, where he was apprehended.
Inspector Musa filed a case with Demra Police Station, accusing the suspect of fraud and extortion, the statement said.
