A couple and their three children have suffered burn injuries after a gas leak caused an explosion at a residence in Narayanganj’s Fatullah.
The incident occurred in the Giridhara area around 7am on Sunday, according to Mahabub Alam of the Fatullah Model Police Station.
“A team was sent to the scene when the incident was reported,” he said. “We don’t have the details yet.”
National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute Assistant Professor Dr Shawon Bin Rahman said that five people had been brought to the facility in “critical condition”.
The victims were identified as Md Kalam, 35, his wife Saima, 32, their son Munna, 7, and their daughters Kotha, 7, and Munni, 10.
Kalam suffered burns on 95 percent of his body, Saima on 60 percent, Munna on 30 percent, Kotha on 52 percent, and Munni on 35 percent.
Hasan, a neighbour who brought them to the hospital, said Kalam is a vegetable trader and lived with his wife and children at the residence.
Around 7am, Hasan heard a loud blast from the house. Neighbours rushed to the spot to see a fire inside. They then rescued the family and brought them to the hospital.
“All of the victims are in critical condition. They are receiving treatment,” Dr Shawon said.
