Police have received four days to interrogate the former chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority Rear Admiral Mohammad Sohail, who was sacked from the Bangladesh Navy, and former MP Ahmad Hossain, organising secretary of the Awami League, over the murder of Jubo Dal leader Nabin Talukder.

Sub Inspector Nazmul Hassan of Paltan Police Station brought the two to court and requested them to be remanded for 10 days. After the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim remanded them for four days.

In his remand petition, Nazmul said:

“The two suspects were the planners and masterminds. With their support, unidentified criminals shot and killed Md Nabin Talukder according to their plans. They must be interrogated in the interest of a fair investigation and to deliver justice in the case.”

Pro-BNP senior lawyer Omar Farooq Farooqi supported the state lawyer in the case.

After the hearing, he said: “The accused are not listed as suspects in the case. However, one of them is a central leader of the Awami League and the other is a member of the security forces. They have important information. In consideration of the seriousness of the case, they should be questioned to the full extent.”

The two suspects spoke from the dock with the court’s permission during the hearing. But their voices were too low to be heard from a distance.

After a 20-minute hearing, the magistrate remanded them for four days.

Sohail was arrested from Dhaka’s Banani and Ahmad from Rampura on Tuesday, DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Obaidur Rahman confirmed.

However, he could not immediately say in which cases they were arrested.

The Bangladesh Navy issued a letter to Sohail on Monday sending him to compulsory retirement. He was arrested the next day.

The Navy took the step against Sohail after complaints of corruption, forceful abduction, and killing were raised against him.

Earlier on Aug 7, he was removed from the post of port chairman and made the commander of the Bangladesh Navy Training and Doctrine.

Sohail was promoted to the rear admiral post from commodore on Feb 22, 2022. People raised objections saying that he received the promotion without commanding any naval base or completing important military courses because he was favoured by the Sheikh Hasina government.

Sohail served as the Chittagong Port Authority chairman for more than a year.

Before he was appointed to the post on Apr 12 last year, he served as the Payra Port Authority chairman from Feb 27, 2022.

Sohail also worked as the director of the media wing of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) for two years from 2010.

Awami League Organising Secretary Ahmad Hossain entered parliament after winning the Netrokona-5 seat in the 12th general election.

Serving as the Awami League organising secretary for five terms, Ahmad began his political career as a grassroots activist of its student wing Chhatra League.

He worked as the Bishkakuni Union Chhatra League President and also as the Purbadhola Upazila Chhatra League general secretary.

While studying at Dhaka University, he served as Sir AF Rahman Hall Chhatra League president, a member of Bangladesh Chhatra League and also its publication secretary, organising secretary, vice president, acting president and Bangladesh Chhatra League Convention Preparatory Committee convener.

Later, he became deputy secretary of the Awami League three times and organising secretary five times including in his current term.
