Awami League candidate ATM Abdul Wahhab wins Magura by-polls

Awami League candidate ATM Abdul Wahhab has won the Magura-1 by-election by a huge margin.

The retired army officer bagged 93,181 votes while his nearest rival, independent candidate, Tapan Kumar Roy got only 12,790 votes in Saturday’s polls.

 

Returning Officer Mujibur Rahman announced the results at night after voting ended without any untoward incident.

 

The BNP abstained from the by-election.

 

Magura-1 constituency fell vacant after the death of four-time MP Mohammad Sirajul Akbar in March.

 

Police said a mobile court jailed a youth to two years and fined him Tk 5,000 for casting proxy vote at Sreepur.

 

Voter response though was scanty polling stations in villages were more crowded.

 

An Awami League leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, told bdnews24.com that the party activists were not much active as they had anticipated an easy win for the party-backed candidate.

 

Returning Officer Rahman said:“The by-poll for the Magura-2 constituency that held in 1994 was controversial. So, the Election Commission did not want to take any chance this time. And thankfully we’ve succeeded in conducting a free and fair poll this time with everyone’s cooperation.”
