Biswadip Das, the senior editor of bdnews24.com, has stepped up to take charge as the acting editor-in-chief following Toufique Imrose Khalidi’s death.
The management appointed him to lead the newsroom on Sunday, days after the death of Editor-in-Chief Khalidi.
“Editor-in-Chief Toufique Imrose Khalidi died at a London hospital on Friday after suffering a brain haemorrhage. We are trying to come to terms with the loss. During this interim period, Biswadip Das will lead the newsroom as acting editor-in-chief,” a bdnews24.com spokesperson said.
The organisation traces its beginnings to 2005, when BDNEWS operated as a news provider similar to a news agency. A change in ownership and management the following year set it on a new course.
In July 2006, a new management team led by Khalidi transformed the organisation into Bangladesh’s first online news company.
On Oct 23 that year, bdnews24.com began its 24-hour operation in its new form, marking the start of a new era in Bangladesh’s digital journalism.
Khalidi remained editor-in-chief and managing director until his death.
Biswadip had been with bdnews24.com as an editor since that transformation and later rose to become a senior editor.
He studied English literature, journalism and law, and began his journalism career at The Financial Express. He later held key positions at The Daily Star and Independent Television.
