The National Press Club has expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Toufique Imrose Khalidi, bdnews24.com editor-in-chief and its permanent member.
In a condolence message on Saturday, Press Club President Hasan Hafiz and General Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan said Khalidi was one of the pioneers in the development of online and digital journalism in Bangladesh.
“Bangladesh has lost a gentleman and a prominent media personality in his untimely death. His contribution to journalism and the media will be remembered,” they said.
The Press Club leaders prayed for the salvation of his soul and expressed deep sympathy to his bereaved family.
According to a media statement signed by Quazi Rownaq Hossain, a member of the club's managing committee, Khalidi fell seriously ill after suffering a brain haemorrhage while on a personal trip to London and was taken to St Bartholomew's Hospital there.
Doctors pronounced him dead at 2:23pm local time on Friday. He was 59.
He had been suffering from several health complications for a long time.
During his career, Khalidi worked at several media organisations besides bdnews24.com, including The Daily Star, The Financial Express and BBC World Service's Bangla service.
He is survived by a son, as well as many relatives, colleagues and well-wishers.
