There is only one policeman for 1,035 people in Bangladesh currently.
The state minister said the government was planning to raise that ratio to one policeman for 800 people.
"Very soon 17,000 police members will be appointed. Everything is going according to the plan. Now we need your cooperation," he said on Saturday.
At the interaction, he also mentioned the government's initiatives to provide the police force with all kinds of facilities.
"We will take care of your needs and you will think about the country's security."
Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told the police officials about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's stance against criminals regardless of their political identities.
Responding to queries after the programme, he told reporters that Bangladesh would not allow activities of terrorists, either from India or Myanmar, on its soil.
