President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for an end to confrontational and vindictive politics, urging instead a political culture based on harmony, consensus and democracy.
He made the remarks on Monday after laying the foundation stone of Thakurgaon University in the Jamalpur area of Sadar Upazila.
“We do not want to see politics of conflict or revenge. Enough is enough,” Fakhrul told reporters after the ceremony.
“I believe the people of the country now want politics of consensus, democracy and parliamentary politics.”
The foundation stone was laid around 11:30am at the designated site of the proposed university beside the Thakurgaon-Pirgonj road.
The move follows a long-standing demand from residents of Thakurgaon for a university in the district.
Fakhrul said the project fulfilled a commitment made by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
“The people of Thakurgaon had long expected a university to be established here. Today, it has been possible to lay the foundation stone by fulfilling the commitment made by our prime minister,” he said.
He thanked Tarique for helping expedite approval of the university and selection of the site.
Fakhrul also thanked the Ministry of Industries, Thakurgaon Sugar Mill authorities and the University Grants Commission for completing the necessary procedures.
The president said the university would create new opportunities for higher education in the region and help future generations build careers and contribute to the country’s development.
He urged local residents to help protect and develop the institution.
“Please look after this university and take care of it,” he said.
