Two more die in Sitakunda explosion

This takes the total death toll from the incident to six

Two more people have died of the burn wounds they suffered after an explosion at the SN Corporation shipbreaking yard in Chattogram’s Sitakunda.

The victims, Jahangir Howlader and Md Barkatullah, died early Saturday morning while receiving treatment at the intensive care unit at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

This raises the total death toll from the incident to six.

Jahangir and Barkatullah had suffered severe burns, with Jahangir's body 70 percent burnt and Barkatullah's 50 percent burnt, said Dr Md Tariqul Islam from the hospital’s emergency department.

On Sept 7, around 11:30am, an explosion occurred at the ship pump house during maintenance work, leading to a fire that resulted in 12 people being burnt.

The injured were initially taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital’s burn unit. Due to their deteriorating conditions, eight of them were later transferred to Dhaka’s Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
