Acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal will administer the oath of office to Bangladesh's newly elected president, according to an opinion given by the law ministry.

MA Awal, joint secretary (opinion) at the law ministry, confirmed the matter on Thursday.

“We have given our opinion to the relevant department that there will be no violation of the law if Acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal administers the oath,” he said.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on Jul 24, citing personal health reasons. Under the Constitution, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has been serving as acting president until a new president takes office.

In the meantime, Deputy Speaker Kayser has assumed the responsibilities of the speaker in an acting capacity.

The Cabinet Division sought a legal opinion from the law ministry on who should administer the oath to the newly elected president on Friday under the circumstances.

In response, the ministry said there would be no legal complication if Kayser administered the oath, as he is performing all the duties of the speaker.
