Shahabuddin may leave Bangabhaban by ‘Sunday or Monday’

He is set to move into his Gulshan residence, an official says

Following his resignation as president, Mohammed Shahabuddin is likely to leave Bangabhaban on Sunday or Monday and move into his Gulshan residence, a Bangabhaban official has said.

Speaking on condition of anonymity on Saturday, the official told bdnews24.com that Shahbuddin will move into his Gulshan residence after vacating Bangabhaban.

"Preparations have already been completed there [Gulshan residence]. His personal wing is overseeing the arrangements."

On Friday, those involved were seen at his residence "Green Villa" on Road 123 in Gulshan-1, installing a new telephone connection and making other preparations.

Shahabuddin tendered his resignation to Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on Friday afternoon.

Under the Constitution, the speaker has assumed the responsibilities of acting president.

In his resignation letter, Shahabuddin cited health complications and the need for long-term medical treatment.

He took office as Bangladesh's 22nd president on Apr 24, 2023, during the Awami League government's tenure, for a five-year term.

Before assuming the presidency, he had served as a commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission.

His presidency entered an unprecedented phase 16 months into the term when the 2024 July Uprising toppled the Awami League government and the then prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India.

During the tenure of the then interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, Shahabuddin came under sustained political pressure and repeated protests demanding his resignation.

He stayed in office for months after those calls intensified, before ultimately stepping down nearly two years before the scheduled end of his term.
