The BNP has decided to request the United Nations and the interim government's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus to conduct an independent probe into the killings that occurred during the uprising.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the decision during an emergency press conference at the party chief’s office in Dhaka's Gulshan, on Saturday night.
"From the beginning, we have spoken out about the brutal ‘genocide’ carried out by the government using its state forces before the victory of this movement, and the United Nations has expressed the most concern”, said Fakhrul.
“We have decided to send a letter to the UN requesting an impartial investigation into the matter."
“We have also decided to send a letter to the interim government's chief advisor,” he added.
In addition to calling for a probe into the killings, the party is also seeking the release of 50 Bangladeshi workers detained in the UAE for supporting the movement.
The party plans to send these letters within the next few days.
