The Airport Armed Police Battalion (AAPBn) has detained six people at Dhaka's Shahjalal International Airport on charges of smuggling nearly 600g of gold.
The AAPBn says the detainees are members of a smuggling ring and was working for them as “receivers”.
The detainees have been identified as Md Monir Hossain, 32, Kazi Masud, 23, Saidul Islam, 26, Ilias Khan, 33, Sabbir Mia, 22, and Md Kamal Hossain, 44.
In a media statement on Thursday, the AAPBn said that the detainees were seen loitering suspiciously on the south side of the open government parking area in front of the Dhaka airport around 4:30am on Wednesday.
Sensing the presence of police, they tried to escape in a microbus, but were caught before they could get away.
They were then taken to the AAPBn office and 597.3g of gold ornaments were recovered from them during a search. Each gold ornament recovered was 22 carats. Their total estimated market value was Tk 9.44 million.
After questioning the detainees, the AAPBn learned that the recovered gold ornaments were smuggled to Bangladesh from different countries by unknown passengers and the six had been involved in the airport-based gold smuggling ring for a long time.
A case has been filed against the detainees at the Airport Police Station, AAPBn said.
The force’s Superintendent of Police Mohammad Rezaul Kabir said, "The Airport APBn is playing an active role, as always, in preventing smuggling and suppressing other crimes in the airport area. The Airport APBN is determined to prevent all types of illegal activities, including gold and drug smuggling. Our operations and intelligence activities will continue to prevent any smuggling activities at the airport."
