Former chief justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim has died at the age of 81. He had been suffering from various diseases related to old age.
He passed away at Dhaka’s Bangladesh Specialised Hospital early on Saturday morning, said the hospital’s Senior Officer Shahriar Masud.
“Mohammad Fazlul Karim was undergoing treatment at our hospital,” he said. “He died at 4:43am this morning.”
Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has expressed his deep condolences at Fazlul’s passing, a statement sent by Supreme Court Appellate Division spokesperson Md Shafiqul Islam said.
The funeral prayers for the departed chief justice will be held following Zuhr prayers at the Supreme Court Inner Court Yard on Saturday.
Fazlul was born on Sept 30, 1943 in Chattogram. In 1964, he earned a law degree from Dhaka University.
From 1965 to 1992 he served as a judge. On Nov 1, 1992 he was elevated as a justice to the High Court Division and then to the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division on May 15, 2001.
He served as the chief justice of Bangladesh from Feb 8, 2010 to Sept 29, 2010.
