Annisul’s 96-year old father Shariful Huq is now staying with his another son, Bangladesh Army chief General Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Huq, at Dhaka Cantonment.

The late mayor’s Private Secretary AKM Mizanur Rahman told bdnews24.com on Friday that the family did not inform Shariful about the death as they are concerned about the shock he may suffer.

“He (Shariful) is also sick now,” Mizanur said.

Annisul went to London by the end of July as his daughter was scheduled to give birth the next month. He was admitted to a hospital there after falling ill.

He died at the hospital on Thursday night. The doctors had diagnosed him with cerebral vasculitis — an inflammation of the blood vessel wall involving the brain.

Mizanur said Shariful was moved from Annisul’s house to General Belal’s around a week after the mayor went to London as there were not many people to look after him at the mayor’s house in Banani.

Shariful, hailing from Kabirhat at Companyganj in Noakhali, had worked at the Ansar force.

He has two other sons. Iqbal Huq is a doctor living in the United States while Helal Huq is a US Navy captain.

Annisul posted some photos of the celebrations of Shariful’s birthday on Facebook on July 14, 2015.

“Today is my father’s 94th birthday. He has suffered much to rear us. He never put up with wrongdoings and corruption during his time as a government employee. He always told us that he would not be able to leave any asset for us, but education. Please pray for him,” Annisul wrote.

Shariful Huq cast his ballot for Annisul in the Apr 28 2015 mayoral election along with other members of the family at Banani Bidyaniketan centre.

There, he had told bdnews24.com: “I am hopeful about my son getting elected.”
