Rain will continue in four divisions of Bangladesh on Monday under the influence of a depression, but showers will start to ease from Tuesday, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Meteorologist Abul Kalam Mollik said on Monday morning: “A couple of showers are typical during the monsoon, but the weather should improve quite a bit from tomorrow. Then temperatures will slowly start to climb again.”
It has been raining in different parts of the country since a depression in the Bay of Bengal turned into a deep land depression. Dhaka saw persistent rain throughout Saturday and Sunday, but the sun began peeking out from behind the clouds on Monday.
The BMD says there may be quite a bit of rain in the Khulna, Barishal, Rajshahi, and Rangpur Divisions, but the rain’s intensity will drop in the Dhaka, Sylhet, Mymensingh, and Chattogram divisions.
In its regular bulletin, the BMD said that most of the Rajshahi and Khulna divisions, many parts of the Rangpur Division, and some parts of the Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal, Sylhet, and Chattogram divisions may see temporary gusty wind and light to moderate rain or thunderstorms in the 24 hours from 9am on Monday.
Parts of the Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Khulna divisions may see moderate to heavy rain.
Manikganj’s Aricha saw the most rain in the 24 hours to 6am on Monday, recording 189 mm, the BMD says. Khulna saw 154 mm, Dhaka 138 mm, Faridpur 130 mm, Jashore 109 mm, Chuadanga 108 mm, and Barishal’s Hizla 106 mm.
Usually, 1-10 mm of rainfall in 24 hours is considered light rain, 11-22 mm is moderate, 23-43 mm is moderately heavy, 44-88 mm is heavy and more than 88 mm is very heavy.
RIVERS BELOW DANGER LEVEL
Rivers across the country are still flowing below their danger levels despite the rain caused by the depression and the waterlogging in the low-lying areas of Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Lakshmipur, Noakhali, Feni, Barishal and Khulna, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre says.
FFWC Executive Engineer Sarder Udoy Raihan said: “The situation will improve. The rivers are all flowing below their danger levels. There are currently no worries of flooding.”
The FFWC had previously scrapped the holidays of officials and staff in the Chattogram Division’s coastal areas due to concerns about flooding in the area after the heavy rain on Friday night.
