Govt employees resume office after long Eid holiday

Government, semi-government, autonomous, semi-autonomous, and private offices across the country were closed from May 25 to May 31

Government employees have returned to work after a seven-day holiday for Eid-ul-Azha.

They were seen chatting in groups as Eid festivity lingered in the air at the Secretariat on Monday, the first working day after the break.

A visit to different offices at the Secretariat showed a touch of the festive spirit still apparent alongside the regular work.

From Monday, all institutions in the country's financial sector, including banks, insurance companies, and the stock market, have also resumed operations.

Regular trading has likewise resumed at both the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE).

In line with the government holidays, financial institutions and courts had remained closed since May 25. The government had earlier announced through an official notification that banks, offices, and courts would reopen on Jun 1 after the holiday period.

However, to facilitate the payment of salaries and bonuses to employees in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector—the country's leading export-earning industry—some bank branches located in garment industry areas remained open on May 25 and 26.

Also, bank branches, sub-branches, and booths located in sea ports, land ports, and airport areas were instructed to maintain import and export-related banking activities on a limited scale.

Before the holiday period, government offices, courts, and all branches of banks had remained open on the May 23 and May 24, despite the weekend holiday on Saturday.

According to the government's decision, on the occasion of the Eid-ul-Azha, government, semi-government, autonomous, semi-autonomous, and private offices across the country remained closed from May 25 to May 31.
