A man has been arrested in Chattogram with counterfeit foreign currency.
Sohel Chowdhury, 40, was detained on Thursday during a raid in the Oxygen Pathanpara area under Bayezid Police Station, according to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
Acting on a tip-off, RAB personnel conducted the raid at a flat in Jahanara Bhaban of Ahmadia Housing Society, where they seized fake foreign currency from his possession.
The recovered notes include 74,500 counterfeit Indian rupees, fake UAE 100-dirham notes and 1,700 counterfeit US dollars, the RAB said.
Sohel, a resident of Fatikchhari Upazila, is being handed over to the police for further legal action, the force added.
Sohel was part of a syndicate involved in circulating counterfeit foreign currency, according to Tauhidul Islam, commander of RAB-7’s Chandgaon Camp.
“He collects fake foreign currencies from other members of the syndicate. Later, he sells them to different people.”
Tauhidul added that the RAB was working to collect information about other members of the gang and arrest them.
