Prime Minister Tarique Rahman says the government expects the police to do everything they can to ensure the safety of people's lives and property.
He said, "The current government, formed by the people's verdict, is a reflection of the aspirations of the people who love democracy and freedom after the bloody mass uprising by students in 2024, and as a continuation of the anti-fascist movement and struggle for over a decade and a half.
"The oppressed and repressed people, who have been victims of numerous attacks and cases for years, want peace and security during the current democratic government."
Addressing police personnel at the annual parade at the Rajarbagh Police Lines grounds on Sunday, the head of government said: "Ensuring the peace and security of the people of the country depends mostly on your activities, which means the role of the police.
"You will do everything you can to ensure the safety of people's lives and property. This is the government's expectation of you."
Before that, the prime minister inaugurated the Police Week-2026.
The main theme of this year's Police Week is “My Police, My Country, Bangladesh First”.
The national anthem was played at the beginning of the programme.
The programmes for Police Week will continue until May 13.
The prime minister inspected and received salutes from an orderly, impressive and colourful parade of various police contingents and flag-carrying teams. He rode in an open jeep during the inspection.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabder led the annual police parade.
This is the first Police Week celebrated by the BNP government since it came to power after winning an absolute majority in the 13th general elections.
