Four people have been killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a battery-run three-wheeler on the Patuakhali-Kuakata Highway. The bus crashed into a roadside ditch after the accident, injuring at least 35 passengers.
The accident occurred near the Payra Petrol Pump intersection in Patuakhali Sadar Upazila around 11:30pm on Saturday, according to Patuakhali Sadar Police chief Md Moniruzzaman.
The dead have been identified as 35-year-old Jahangir Howlader from the Sadar Upazila, 23-year-old Tithi from Bauphal Upazila, 50-year-old Quayyum Pyada and 40-year-old Shilpi Rani, both from Galachipa Upazila.
Police say an Imran Travellers bus headed from Barguna’s Taltoli to Dhaka was entering the Payra Petrol Pump intersection when a three-wheeler travelling in the opposite direction from the Patuakhali intersection crashed into it head-on.
Both vehicles then veered out of control into the roadside ditch. The three-wheeler was caught and crushed under the bus. Locals rushed to the spot upon hearing the noise and launched a rescue effort.
Police and Fire Service personnel joined the effort when the incident was reported. Initially, three bodies were recovered from the scene. All of them were passengers on the autorickshaw.
Afterwards, Sub-Inspector Md Bellal Hossain from the Sadar Police said rescue efforts ended after police used a wrecker to lift the bus out of the ditch. Another body was then recovered from underneath the vehicle, taking the death toll to four.
The bodies are at the Patuakhali Medical College Hospital morgue, says police official Md Moniruzzaman.
They will be handed over to their families after post-mortems.
The injured have received first aid at the hospital and other clinics in the area.
