Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali has stepped down from his post amid a reshuffle in the police ranks after the new government assumed office.

Sazzat sent a letter to the Police Headquarters, requesting to be relieved of his duties, citing “personal and family reasons”.

“My contract runs until November, but I have submitted my resignation today,” he told bdnews24.com.

The resignation comes a day after a reshuffle at the top of the police administration, including changes to the post of inspector general of police.

A 1984-batch officer of the BCS police cadre, Sazzat was dismissed in November 2016 while serving as additional IGP at Police Headquarters during the Awami League government.

Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime in the 2024 political upheaval, the interim administration reinstated him.

He later took charge as the DMP's 38th commissioner on Nov 20, 2024.

On the same day, Baharul Alam assumed office as inspector general of police.

However, the BNP-led government removed him on Tuesday and appointed APBn chief Ali Hossain Fakir as the new IGP.

Speculation over a possible change in the DMP leadership had been circulating for several days before Sazzat submitted his resignation request.
