Two killed as ambulance carrying body home crashes in Narail

The collision during the return journey from Dhaka hospital leaves multiple passengers injured

A woman has been killed along with an ambulance driver in a road crash in Narail while returning home with her husband's body from a hospital in Dhaka.

Four other people have been injured in the collision.

On Wednesday, around 9am, the ambulance collided head-on with a bus near Badshar Garage on the Narail-Kalna Highway, said Ajay Kumar Kundu, chief of Narail Sadar Police Station.

The dead were identified as Jahanara Begum, 45, wife of Ismail Hossain of Mahidia village in Jashore, and ambulance driver Akbar Hossain, 32, from Lakshmipur.

Officer Ajay said Ismail, father of police Sub-Inspector Abu Taher, died at Rajarbagh’s Central Police Hospital early in the morning.

Taher was travelling home with his father's body in the ambulance along with his mother Jahanara, when the accident took place.

Police, citing witnesses, said the ambulance was near the garage when it crashed head-on with a Kalna-bound bus.

Jahanara died at the scene, while five people were injured.

The injured were taken to Narail District Hospital, where doctors pronounced the ambulance driver dead.

The remaining injured victims were referred to Jashore Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Police officer Ajay said the bodies had been recovered and kept at the Narail District Hospital morgue.

Legal procedures are under way.
