Police have claimed that Kazi Md Mamunur Rashid, secretary general of the Raushon Ershad-led faction of the Jatiya Party, was working as an associate of Enayet Karim Chowdhury, a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin who was detained for “suspicious movement” on Dhaka’s Minto Road.
Based on Mamunur’s initial interrogation, police said in his remand plea on Monday that the Jatiya Party leader had received Enayet at the airport upon his arrival in Bangladesh.
He was allegedly arranging Enayet's accommodation, covering his expenses, and acting as an associate.
Mamunur was arrested near The Westin Dhaka on Sunday by police detectives.
Earlier, DB Ramna Zonal Team Inspector Akhtar Morshed, the investigating officer, sought 10 days to grill Mamunur in custody at Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque's court.
The application said that Mamunur, alongside unnamed suspects and in collusion with Enayet, purportedly created panic among the public several times to endanger the integrity, solidarity, public safety, or sovereignty of Bangladesh.
Evidence suggests they were involved in attempts to overthrow the current government by secretly holding meetings and consultations with leaders of various political parties, high-ranking individuals, and the business community.
Furthermore, there is evidence of conspiracy, assistance, or incitement aimed at damaging the state property through mass protests in different locations.
Sufficient evidence has been found over the involvement of this suspect in the case, the petition read.
The investigating officer said that it needs to be uncovered whether Mamunur, in conspiracy with Enayet and other fugitive suspect, secretly consulted with any political group or any unregistered, suspended, or prohibited political party to destabilise Bangladesh’s political, economic, and social condition on behalf of an influential foreign state.
Enayet was detained on Sept 13 after being spotted “moving suspiciously” in a Prado SUV near Minto Road. When asked why he was there, he could not provide an answer. He was subsequently taken into custody and two iPhones were seized from him.
He was later booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Ramna Model Police Station. Enayet has since been interrogated twice on seven days’ remand.
According to the case statement, Enayet went to the US in 1988 and received citizenship in 2004.
He allegedly arrived in Bangladesh from New York on Sept 6 as an “agent of a foreign intelligence agency” with the aim of toppling the country’s interim government.
Mamunur, however, was placed in custody for a six-day interrogation.
