A dismissed soldier and his two associates have been arrested on charges of “planning a major sabotage” disguised as a protest rally and attacking army personnel.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Md Naimul Islam and his two associates were arrested by law-enforcing agencies in Dhaka’s Khilkhet around 2pm on Saturday.
However, the identities of the associates were not given in the ISPR statement.
It said Naimul was "planning a major sabotage" at the entrance of Dhaka Cantonment and was carrying out different provocative campaigns on social media.
“Since Aug 5, he has been plotting subversive activities, as well as making provocative statements in the media, in coordination with several former army personnel dismissed for breaching discipline,” the statement said.
In another notice published shortly before Naimul’s arrest, the ISPR announced a ban on all types of meetings, rallies, and processions on the roads in the areas adjacent to Kochukhet Road, Bijoy Sarani, the Chief Advisor's Office (CAO), Birsreshtho Shaheed Jahangir Gate, BAF Shaheen College, Mohakhali Flyover, Sainik Club intersection, Bhashantek, Matikata, and ECB Chattar.
Regarding Naimul’s arrest, the ISPR said he was previously dismissed from service for demanding dowry from his wife, physical and mental torture, and involvement in several acts against military discipline.
The ISPR also said the dismissed soldier attacked another soldier on Saturday.
The statement said, “To prevent such undisciplined activities (protests, gatherings, provocative statements in the media), an army delegation tried to contact him at approximately 2pm on Saturday in Khilkhet, when dismissed soldier Naimul, along with some of his associates, ambushed an army member present there with local weapons.
“A patrol team from a nearby army camp immediately reached the spot and arrested Naimul and his associates.”
