Former principal secretary to the prime minister and member of parliament Abul Kalam Azad has been arrested in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
DMP’s Deputy Commissioner for Media and Public Relations Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the arrest on Saturday evening.
“Abul Kalam Azad, the mastermind behind the fascist Awami government’s wrongdoings and the former principal secretary to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has been arrested,” he said.
However, the specific case under which the DB police arrested him has not yet been disclosed.
After his tenure as principal secretary, Azad served as the principal coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, at the Prime Minister’s Office. Later, he was appointed as a special envoy for the United Nations’ Climate Vulnerable Forum, or CVF.
In the 12th general election, he was elected as a member of parliament for the Jamalpur-5 constituency on the Awami League ticket.
Azad came under scrutiny during his political campaign when he violated election rules by hosting lavish feasts with a large motorcade and slaughtering cows at several locations, including Bangladesh High School grounds in Kendua, Sharifpur High School grounds, and Baruamari School grounds in Laxirchar union.
He was appointed as the secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office in January 2014 and later promoted to principal secretary in February 2015.
A 1982 officer of the special Bangladesh Civil Service batch, Azad held several administrative positions, including secretary of the Economic Relations Division, or ERD, and power and energy secretary.
