Prof Mohammad Azam of the Dhaka University Department of Bangla has been named as the new director general of Bangla Academy.

Khalil Ahmed, secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, informed bdnews24.com of the appointment on Thursday.

Asked about the matter, Prof Azam said: “I have received a letter appointing me as the director general of Bangla Academy. There are a few formalities at the university. I hope to join from Sunday after completing them.”

Azam is set to succeed Prof Md Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari in the role.

Rashid was appointed director general of Bangla Academy on Jul 18. After the fall of the Awami League government on Aug 5, he resigned from his post on Aug 10, citing personal reasons.
