The condition of four firefighters burnt while tackling a warehouse blaze in Gazipur's Tongi is critical, according to Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
He visited the injured firemen at Dhaka’s National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on Tuesday and pledged that the government would ensure the “highest standard of treatment”.
"Four people were burnt in yesterday's incident, with two of them seriously injured. As you know, this is a hospital at international standards. The quality of treatment is very good. Even then, the government will provide all kinds of support. There will be no negligence. The highest possible measures will be taken."
Asked about relocating chemical warehouses, the adviser said: "When the chemical warehouse accident happened in Old Dhaka, those godowns were moved to Munshiganj. The Tongi incident was an unfortunate accident. An accident is always an accident."
The fire broke out at the chemical warehouse on Monday afternoon. Four firefighters suffered burns while trying to extinguish the flames.
Three of the injured are being treated at the national burn institute, its Director Dr Nasir Uddin said.
"All of them are in critical condition as they have suffered burns on more than 40 percent of their bodies. They have been kept in the High Dependency Unit (HDU)."
Taking burn patients abroad for treatment may sometimes help, but it can also worsen their condition, he added.
"We will make a coordinated decision on this matter."
Another Tongi fire victim named Al-Amin Hossain Babu, has been admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He has suffered burns on 95 percent of his body. Doctors have said that Al-Amin's condition is also critical.
