Police have arrested a man for allegedly raping a schoolteacher in the Alutila tourist area of Khagrachhari.
The incident reportedly occurred around 8:30pm on Thursday. Later that night, police arrested the suspect after a complaint was filed by the alleged victim, according to Md Taufiqul Islam, chief of Matiranga Police Station.
The arrestee has been identified as 24-year-old Liton Tripura.
According to the case statement, the schoolteacher and a friend went to Alutila, about 6km from Khagrachhari town, for an outing around 8pm. Liton followed them there on a motorcycle.
When the woman and her friend reached the Tareng area of Alutila, Liton threatened them with a weapon and took the teacher into a nearby forest, where he allegedly raped her. After the assault, he demanded Tk 10,000 from her.
The woman’s friend then informed the local Army camp, after which members of the Army and local residents detained Liton and handed him over to the police.
Taufiqul said the victim had filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Matiranga Police Station, adding that Liton would be sent to jail through the court.
