The High Court and Appellate Division have been closed for a day to mourn the death of former Supreme Court Bar Association president and Awami League leader Yusuf Hossain Humayun.

Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury announced the closure in a condolence message on Sunday.

Yusuf, also a freedom fighter and a former MP, died in a Dhaka hospital on Saturday. He was 90.

A notification from the Appellate Division said the chief justice prayed for the eternal peace of his departed soul, expressing his condolences to the bereaved family

The vacation benches at the two divisions of the Supreme Court will remain closed on Sunday to honour Yusuf, the notification read.

His funeral was scheduled at the Supreme Court premises at 1:45pm.

A close associate of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Yusuf was elected as a member of parliament from the then Bakerganj-4 constituency as an Awami League candidate in the first national election in 1973.

Yusuf also served as the vice chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council, president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (2016–2017), and convener of the Bangabandhu Awami Ajnibi Parishad, a pro-Awami League lawyers’ platform.

He was also elected president of the Barishal District Bar Association several times.

The senior lawyer was a member of the Awami League Advisory Council until his death. He also served as a member of the party’s Presidium.

Yusuf was one of the lawyers for former prime minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina, who was arrested during the military-controlled caretaker government after the 2008 changeover.

He was born on Nov 14, 1936 in Bhola Sadar Upazila.
