10 jailed for life over policeman's murder during mugging in Chattogram

The court fines each of the convicts Tk 25,000, ordering the money to be paid to the victim's family

Ten men have been sentenced to life imprisonment over the killing of a police officer by a gang of muggers in Chattogram's Ambagan more than a decade ago.

The verdict was delivered on Monday by Judge Mizanur Rahman of the Chattogram Divisional Special Judge’s Court.

The convicted men are Md Jabed, Nurul Alam, Suman Molla, Harun Ar Rashid, Tapan Chandra Sarkar, Mintu Das, Arshal aka Russel, Faruk aka Bullet Faruk, Md Sohel, and Md Babul.

Five of them were present in court when the sentence was handed down, while the remaining five are on the run, said court official Mohammad Sahed.

In addition to life sentences, the court fined each of the men Tk 25,000 and ordered that the total amount be paid to the victim’s family.

On Nov 3, 2013, Constable Abdul Kaiyum, 22, was stabbed to death near the DIG’s Bungalow in Ambagan while on duty.

Kaiyum had joined the police on Oct 6, 2012 in Sandwip Upazila.

The attack occurred when officers confronted a gang of muggers, who turned violent, injuring three other police personnel.

Police filed cases against 19 suspects, and following investigations, 10 men were put on trial.

After hearing the testimony of 14 witnesses, the court delivered its verdict.
