Artificial intelligence-powered cameras have been installed along a 250km stretch of the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in a move aimed at curbing extortion and detecting traffic violations.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed inaugurated the system near Meghnaghat in Narayanganj’s Sonargaon on Tuesday.
He said the AI-powered “Auto Fine System” would help prevent extortion on the highway while allowing authorities to respond quickly to traffic offences.
The system can detect speeding and illegal parking as well as three-wheelers and vehicles travelling on the wrong side of the road, according to the minister.
Highway Police introduced the technology to improve road safety, tighten traffic discipline and ensure effective, transparent action against vehicles that violate traffic rules.
Kanchpur Highway Police chief Shamim Sheikh said 1,427 AI cameras had been installed along about 250km from Signboard in Narayanganj to the Chattogram City Gate.
Once a vehicle is detected violating traffic rules, details of the case will be sent by SMS to its registered owner’s mobile phone, he added.
The fine can then be paid through a designated mobile banking system.
Highway Police Additional Inspector General Faruk Ahmed presided over the inauguration ceremony.
