30-year-old accused of killing mother over ‘drug money’ in Khulna

The women begged for her life, but nobody helped, alleges her daughter

Police have arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly killing his mother after she “refused to give him money to consume drugs” in Khulna’s Rupsha Upazila.

Mimmi Begum, 50, the wife of Hamidul Islam in Aichgati Union died around 8:30am on Friday after her son Nadim Islam bludgeoned her head with a wooden stick, said Sub-Inspector Md Ujjal Hossain of the Aichgati police camp.

Citing locals, he said: “Nadim had been addicted to drugs for a long time and often took money from his mother. In the morning, he locked into an argument with the woman over money.

“At one point, Nadim hit his mother on the head with a wooden stick lying next to their house. Mimmi Begum was seriously injured before she collapsed on the ground and died instantly.”

Later, locals reported the matter to police who arrested Nadim around 8:45am.

The victim's daughter, identified only as Shila, said, "My mother begged for her life, repeatedly screaming, 'Save me,' but to no avail."

Abdur Razzak Mir, chief of Rupsha Police which oversees the police camp, said: "It is initially believed that the murder resulted from a dispute over drug money."

Nadim is being interrogated as an investigation is under way, the police officer said.
