The Election Commission (EC) is holding a meeting on the code of conduct for parties and candidates for parliamentary elections and the boundaries of parliamentary constituencies.
The meeting began at 11am on Thursday at the Nirbachan Bhaban, or Election Building, in Dhaka's Agargaon.
This is the seventh commission meeting of the EC led by AMM Nasir Uddin. Apart from the chief election commissioner, four election commissioners, the EC secretary and relevant officials were in attendance.
The agenda of the meeting includes the code of conduct for political parties and candidates, the boundaries of parliamentary constituencies and various other issues.
On May 12, the government issued the National Parliament Constituency Delimitation (Amendment) Ordinance.
The EC has received 607 applications so far for the redrawing of 75 parliamentary constituencies.
The electoral watchdog has an obligation to delimit the boundaries of each constituency before the parliamentary elections. Accordingly, the EC will publish the draft of the boundaries of 300 constituencies. The final gazette will be published after hearing the demands and objections on this draft proposal.
Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah has already said that 607 applications have been submitted so far. Various people have made these applications in various ways, seeking the redrawing of 75 seats. These applications have been reviewed at the committee level. More detailed discussions will be held in the future.
The draft code of conduct contains a set of proposals that includes imposing some restrictions on campaigning during the election period under the interim government, and monitoring social media.
This is the first meeting of the Election Commission after the possibility of elections in February next year was raised in a meeting between BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus in London on Jun 13.
However, CEC Nasir said that no statement can be made regarding the date without discussions with the government. However, the CEC is prepared regardless of whether the election is held in February or April, he added.
