Burning fireworks, firecrackers and flying lanterns have been prohibited in Chattogram city on the last day of the Gregorian calendar.

Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasib Aziz has issued six instructions imposing strict restrictions on public movement and gatherings, particularly around Patenga and Parki beaches.

The restrictions will come into force from 6pm on Wednesday and remain effective for the next 24 hours, the CMP said.

The instructions were issued under Sections 28, 29 and 33 of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police Ordinance, it added.

According to the CMP directives, no gatherings, dances, cultural programmes or processions will be allowed in public places, on roads, open spaces or on the rooftops of buildings on the night marking the end of the year.

Visitors will not be allowed to stay at Patenga and Parki beaches from Wednesday evening until the same time the following day.

During this period, all registered bars and liquor shops will remain closed.

The CMP has also imposed a ban on carrying licensed firearms, sharp weapons and explosives.
