A man has been hacked to death after being lured out of his home by a phone call in Bogura's Sherpur. His family has since pointed the finger at a local Sramik League leader for the incident.

The fatal attack took place around 11pm on Saturday at Charmatha intersection in Shahbondegi Union's Dharmokam Uttarpara village, according to Sherpur Police Station chief Shafiqul Islam Shafiq.

The dead man was identified as Akbar Ali, 55, a native of Dharmokam Dhakkinpara village.

His family alleged that Abdul Latif, 28, vice president of the Shahbondegi unit of the Sramik League, the labour wing of the Awami League, had been involved in the incident.

Akbar's son Md Shahjamal said his father left home after allegedly receiving a phone call from Latif. A neighbour later informed the family that Akbar was found injured on the road.

"We saw father lying [on the road], bleeding. He wanted to say something, but couldn't speak."

Citing locals, police said

Akbar and Latif were seen together around 8:30pm at a tea stall, police said, citing witnesses. Later, around 11pm, witnesses said they saw two people wrestling at Charmatha intersection. When they approached, Latif fled the scene, leaving Akbar lying on the road in a bloodied state.

The family rushed Akbar to the Sherpur Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Latif has gone into hiding following the incident and has not responded to multiple calls made to his phone.

Akbar's body was sent to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, said Shafiqul.

Police recovered a machete, shawl and a mobile phone from the scene.

An investigation into the death has been launched and a case is being prepared, according to Shafiqul.
